Templates and geodesic flows

Abstract:

Templates are objects introduced for describing the attractors of some dissipative 3-dimensional flows. It was later shown by Birman and Williams that they can also describe very well the topology of the periodic orbits of conservative hyperbolic systems. In 2006 Ghys showed that the Lorenz attractor---the simplest of all templates--- appears when describing an apparently unrelated object: the geodesic flow on the modular surface. In this talk we will describe these results and explain how to construct good templates for other geodesic flows.
